On the 18th of Nov 2024, my LinkedIn account was deactivated after a series of actions were taken on it, as you will see in this screenshot. I have not been able to retrieve this account, which I had had for years since university.

So, I will get into what I think may have happened with the account and why. of course, I am no computer hacker. I have no knowledge on the subject other than the fact that it has been happening a lot in the past few years.

I always pushed to have my work accomplished. If all else could not be sufficiently achieved; at least my work would be done. It was also an escape from the persecution. I had been sleeping in the car for longer than I thought, after I had convinced myself in 2022 that it would never happen again. But that was not to be. Things were soon to reach a head though for the two months that would follow. First, we were transitioning from one venture to the next.

Last year, I decided that I needed a space to work in again, something outside of the car and away from the external forces of cafes and the spies that often came with that. I also wanted to avoid the previous workspaces that had proven to be easy-to-bribe. I searched for something unpopular and affordable and easily accessible.

I signed up to a workspace. I was not impressed that the receptionist was a South African woman, which was confirmed by the Afrikaans accent when I booked a trial day. She seemed friendly and professional so I thought: “What the heck!” The first day I used the space, I realized that a lot of the coworkers were South African and a Chinese man. I took note of these details because I did not have the luxury to overlook them. The Chinese were keen for my chrome and platinum and perhaps some rare earths, and the South Africans were keen on selling out the community. So, because of this, watching my back was not an option. It was of utmost importance.

The first thing I was asked to do was to complete account sign-up on their intranet and get an access card. I was strongly pushed to add my LinkedIn account, which I was reluctant to do. I thought I’d just remove it later. I am almost completely certain that if not for this, I might still have my LinkedIn account.

I had work to do, meetings to attend and I didn’t want to let anyone on the team down. I’s use the pods when I had meetings and each time I did, there was always someone I had to watch out for. Someone standing at an angle by the booths/pods to see my screen or someone listening in next door, possibly. I was always watching my back. It was a temporary solution to just be productive again but it might have cost me.

Membership began 1 November or the end of October 2024. On the 18th, my LinkedIn was hacked into. There were a bunch of notifications about invites. Before I knew it, my account name was changed to Camilla while the data on my page was being systematically removed, then I was locked out. My membership then expired on the 30th of November 2024 after a month of use. On the 3 of December, I had received a credit note for the remainder of my membership — I think it was a deposit.

This is all just an observation that I find noteworthy and non-coincidental.
